  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (or neutral oil)
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (Buttercream Frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (Buttercream Frosting)
  • 2 to 3 tbsp milk (Buttercream Frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (Buttercream Frosting)
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Blue gel food coloring
  • Black gel food coloring

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line your cake pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.Add eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and lump-free.
  3. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. Remove cake from oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack and cool completely before decorating.
  5. Beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Beat until light and fluffy.
  6. Divide frosting into bowls:
    Tint one bowl red
    Tint one bowl blue
    Tint a small portion black for web details
  7. Spread red frosting evenly over the cake.
    Pipe black lines in a spider-web pattern.
    Add blue frosting accents or borders as desired.
